New ICT Business Continuity standard published

The end of 2008 saw a new business continuity standard published, BS 25777:2008 Information and Communications Technology – Continuity management, Code of Practice.

This is a follow on from the very successful standard for general business continuity best practice, BS 25999-1:2006 Business continuity management, Part 1: Code of practice. It has been reported in the technical press that BS 25999 is the most widely used business continuity standard in the world and the more focussed BS 25777 has been eagerly awaited.

BS 25777 defines an ICT service as consisting of people, premises, technology, data, processes and suppliers. Under the technology heading is included the racking, cabling, servers and communications equipment.

The principles of ICT continuity management are based around six key concepts: Protect, Detect, React, Recover, Operate, and Return.

“For each critical ICT service the current continuity capability should be reviewed from a prevention perspective to assess risks of service interruption or degradation, e.g. single points of failure.”

Of course the best way to ensure ICT business continuity is to make sure that a robust and well engineered technology has been installed in the first place. There are many surveys around that quote figures such as that “30% of all network problems are cable related.”

By installing a guaranteed Connectix cabling system that comes with a 25 year warranty, is 100% tested in the factory and then 100% tested after installation and where components are approved by third party laboratories, you will have an excellent way of giving any ICT installation a solid foundation of interconnectivity.
